LEXINGTON – An officer-involved shooting is under investigation in McLean County by the Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation.
State Police troopers responded to a call of shots fired Saturday at 12:42 p.m. on Interstate 55 northbound near Lexington at milepost 178. Police say two vehicles had pulled over and were on the shoulder of the interstate. Upon arrival, officers observed someone shooting at the other vehicle. The subject then reportedly pointed a firearm at officers.
After gunfire was exchanged with police, the subject was fatally struck and later pronounced dead. There were no other injuries, according to authorities.
Special agents of the Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation are investigating the incident. ISP is currently processing evidence and conducting interviews. All evidence will be submitted to the McLean County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and no additional information has been released by police.
Traffic was impacted throughout the afternoon on Interstate 55 as it was backed up for miles.
