Council talks taxes

At the most recent regular meeting of the Chenoa City Council, the group discussed taxes.

The city is still trying to figure out exactly what taxes they are supposed to be getting and if they are getting them.

“Like for the hotel occupancy tax, there’s a county tax and state tax and we are supposed to collect tax,” explained Chenoa Mayor David Shane. “It’s confusing.”

The group did discuss raising the sales tax which is something they could pass as a council for one percent. This could put things back to where they were since the state did away with the grocery tax.

“I didn’t want to raise it because of all the stuff going on with the raising of the rates,” said Shane, referring to water rates and the airport authority. Shane said the authority will not be able to raise taxes in 2025.

In another matter, the mayor revealed EPA came back and asked if the city wanted to do two loans, including lead replacement and mains. They can get a zero percent loan for lead replacement.

“I kind of think that’s a no brainer to do this and federal grant money we could get down the road to pay that off,” added Shane.

Zoning violations were discussed at the regular Dec. 10 meeting as well. Shane wanted the council to look at them before spending money.

“Now, we’ll put it into an ordinance at the next meeting and we can pass it.”

Advertising was approved out of tourism money to target different audiences for local upcoming Christmas events in Chenoa.

Shane noted he has a meeting with State Rep. Jason Bunting about small towns on Wednesday. He will then participate in an EDC seminar hosted by Bunting. A special Chenoa City Council meeting is planned that night to work on the employee handbook.

“It’s going to take a while to get it done,” observed Shane.

The special Wednesday meeting will be the last Chenoa Council meeting of the year.
